EFT Tapping: A Powerful Tool for Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being

Have you ever felt a wave of anxiety that seemed impossible to control? For me, Sunday nights used to feel like a mountain I couldn’t climb. The thought of the week ahead, filled with work stress and self-doubt, was enough to make my chest tighten and my mind race. That’s when I discovered Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), or tapping—a simple, yet profoundly effective tool that helped me regain my calm, process my emotions, and feel more in control of my life.

As someone who now helps others through anxiety, depression, and emotional struggles, I integrate EFT into my heart-centered counselling and therapy sessions. Based in Rufford, my unique approach combines traditional and unorthodox methods to guide individuals toward healing. EFT tapping has been a cornerstone of this journey, both for myself and my clients in Chorley, Leyland, and Preston.

What is EFT Tapping?

EFT, often referred to as “tapping,” is a therapeutic technique that combines elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with acupressure. By tapping on specific meridian points on the body—similar to those used in acupuncture—while focusing on distressing thoughts or emotions, EFT helps to reduce emotional intensity and promote calmness.

Developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig, EFT has since gained widespread recognition for its effectiveness in managing anxiety, trauma, and other mental health challenges.

The Science Behind EFT

Although EFT may seem unconventional, a growing body of research supports its efficacy. Studies have shown that tapping stimulates the amygdala (the brain’s fear center) and signals the body to reduce cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress.

Key Evidence:

  • A 2012 study published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease found that EFT significantly reduced cortisol levels in participants, with an average decrease of 24%. This suggests that tapping has a measurable impact on stress regulation.

  • A 2016 meta-analysis in Energy Psychology Journal concluded that EFT is an effective treatment for anxiety, with results comparable to more traditional methods like CBT.

  • In a study conducted by Dawson Church, PhD, and colleagues, EFT was shown to improve PTSD symptoms in veterans by reducing intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, and emotional distress.

Dr. Peta Stapleton, a leading researcher in EFT, notes, “Tapping works by accessing the stress center of the brain and sending a calming signal. It rewires the way the brain responds to triggers and reduces their intensity over time.”

How EFT Helped Me with Anxiety

For years, Sunday evenings were my toughest moments. I’d feel this overwhelming dread creep in as I prepared for another week of work. My mind would spiral into “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios. No matter how hard I tried to think positively, my body seemed to hold onto the tension.

That’s when I stumbled upon EFT. Initially skeptical, I decided to give it a try—after all, I had nothing to lose. I remember sitting on the edge of my bed, tapping on the side of my hand (the “karate chop” point) while repeating phrases like:

  • “Even though I feel anxious about the week ahead, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

  • “Even though I’m worried I’ll fail, I choose to feel calm and confident.”

Within minutes, I felt a shift. My heart rate slowed, my breathing deepened, and the swirling thoughts in my mind seemed to quiet down. Over time, tapping became my go-to tool, not just for Sundays but for any moment when anxiety threatened to take over.

Today, I share EFT with my clients as a practical, empowering tool they can use anytime, anywhere. Whether we’re tapping together on the boat at Rufford Marina or during a walk in Leyland or Chorley, I’ve seen how this technique helps others find relief and reclaim their peace.

How to Use EFT Tapping

Step 1: Identify the Issue

Start by focusing on what’s bothering you—whether it’s anxiety, fear, or a specific memory. Be as specific as possible.

Step 2: Rate the Intensity

On a scale of 0-10, rate how intense the emotion feels. This helps you track your progress.

Step 3: Set Up the Statement

Create a statement that acknowledges your feeling while affirming self-acceptance. For example:

“Even though I feel [anxious/nervous/etc.], I deeply and completely accept myself.”

Step 4: Tap on the Points

Use your fingers to gently tap on the following points while repeating your setup statement:

1. Karate chop point (side of the hand)

2. Eyebrow point (inner edge of the eyebrow)

3. Side of the eye (temple)

4. Under the eye

5. Under the nose

6. Chin

7. Collarbone

8. Under the arm (bra strap area)

9. Top of the head

Step 5: Reassess

After completing a few rounds of tapping, check your intensity level again. You’ll often find that it’s decreased significantly.

Why EFT Works So Well

EFT is powerful because it addresses both the emotional and physical aspects of distress. By tapping on meridian points, you’re calming the nervous system while rewiring the brain’s response to triggers.

For people in Preston, Chorley, and Leyland who feel overwhelmed by traditional therapy settings, EFT offers a refreshing and accessible alternative. It’s something you can learn quickly and practice on your own, giving you a sense of control over your mental health.

Integrating EFT into My Heart-Centered Guidance

When I work with clients in Rufford, I often combine EFT with other techniques like Reiki, hypnosis, and counselling. My approach is unorthodox because healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Sometimes we’ll tap on the boat, other times we’ll take a walk along the marina or explore nature in Chorley or Leyland.

Healing is a deeply personal journey, and my goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where you can explore what works best for you.
